Callicarpa to Crocus

All pictures (and videos) have been taken in the garden unless otherwise stated

Here we have a short video of the “seasonal pot border” on the lower deck.It is designed to provide a floral display from spring through to Autumn. It’s achieved through succession planting in pots, or simply replacing flowers that have gone over with fresh plants in pots. The Canna is a prominent feature from late Spring to Autumn.

Cardoon - Cynara Cardunculus

The Cardoon (Cynara cardunculus)

It’s interesting how we often use words to provide a deeper experience of the flowers that we see. Some of the words we use are purely descriptive (functional) however, in order to add a deeper dimension, some words/phrases attribute characteristics to plants in an almost anthropomorphic way. A word I often use in relation to the Cardoon is “imperious”. Why might I think it an appropriate descriptor for this plant?

“Imperious” – lordly, masterful, commanding, assertive, arrogant, haughty
