The undoubted head of the downstairs ensemble is Hudson the butler (Gordon Jackson) who is a bigger snob than any of the upstairs lot (Amazon).<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em>At the bottom of the hierarchy we have \u201c<strong>Life in the Gardeners\u2019 Bothy<\/strong>\u201d or as I\u2019ve renamed it to appeal to a wider tv audience \u201c<strong>Getting dirty in stately homes\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life in the gardeners\u2019 bothy documents Arthur Hoopers journey from leaving school at 14 years old in the early 1920\u2019s, up until his retirement, as Head Gardener, in 1975. The style of writing is rustic as befitting the subject matter. There is no \u201cnod\u201d to poetic expression, to romanticism, or to fanciful elaboration. Mr Hooper takes us through an honest, heartfelt, and literal diary of his life in the gardens of some of England\u2019s great estates. We follow Arthur from 3<sup>rd<\/sup>, 2<sup>nd<\/sup>, and 1<sup>st<\/sup> journeyman, to foreman of various stately home areas, to general foreman and eventually up to Head gardener. As the son of a Head Gardener, <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6516\" src=\"http:\/\/mygardentalkstome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_6712-300x216.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mygardentalkstome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_6712-300x216.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/mygardentalkstome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_6712-1024x736.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/mygardentalkstome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_6712-768x552.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/mygardentalkstome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_6712-1536x1103.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/mygardentalkstome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_6712-2048x1471.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/>we are given insights into a tightly structured, tiered, almost feudal life. We experience Arthur\u2019s journey from his adolescent immersion into the Bothy life, his time as a \u201cBothy boy\u201d, across various stately homes, into adulthood, from glass houses to the Chelsea Flower Show, experiences of poachers and the pompous, through to his retirement.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are occasional glimpses of the Arthur\u2019s emotional journey, and the fact that these glimpses are sporadic, gives them added power and impetus. It feels like an echo of a time when those of a certain class weren\u2019t supposed to talk about their feelings. Indeed, it\u2019s possible that, those of a certain class never acquired the skills to articulate the complex and illuminative world of \u201cfeelings\u201d. \u201cHierarchy\u201d is a thread that is writ large throughout the book. The etiquette of life within the Bothy (no women, the seating arrangements at the table, buying the weekly food, etc), relationships with the house staff (cooks, servants, and Head Butler), are all described in a matter-of-fact way that brings them to life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6515 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/mygardentalkstome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_6713-226x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"226\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mygardentalkstome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_6713-226x300.jpeg 226w, https:\/\/mygardentalkstome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_6713-770x1024.jpeg 770w, https:\/\/mygardentalkstome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_6713-768x1021.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/mygardentalkstome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_6713-1155x1536.jpeg 1155w, https:\/\/mygardentalkstome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_6713-1540x2048.jpeg 1540w, https:\/\/mygardentalkstome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_6713-scaled.jpeg 1925w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 226px) 100vw, 226px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a slow-paced, but thoroughly enjoyable read. Indeed, the sedate pace generates a nostalgic, relaxed and contemplative tone in harkening back to life in the 20\u2019s and 30\u2019s, up until the outbreak of WW2. We are connected to lives lived at what might seem to us to be a slow pace, indeed, it is that slowness that is so appealing about this read. It must be said that there were times when my working class roots kicked in and I felt a twinge of frustration and annoyance at the required deference and \u201cdoff your cap\u201d mentality that those in these \u201clower\u201d classes had to show &#8230; but that was the reality. I wondered if I would behave in the same way were I in that situation.
